that's not always how the industry works. i wouldn't exactly say kimya dawson, beth ditto, scout niblett, or even the Deal sisters are the most bubble gum pretty princesses in the world and they're all successful, put out records and tour the world. it's unbelievably shallow to bring up someone's looks. if you don't like her music, fine. but try not to be so superficial and eighth grade about it.

Yeah, they're not necessarily in the mainstream but they are successful. Although Kimya Dawson was all over that Juno soundtrack, that's pretty fucking mainstream.
Whether or not you think she's original, it's pretty unnecessary to bring up her looks. It speaks of a superficial personality and it's unattractive, since you seemed to be so concerned with what is, in fact, attractive.

I work at urban outfitters and when we had the juno soundtrack for sale we would play it all the time and sell an assload. About 4 out of ten people who came to my register bought asking if the Kimya Dawson songs from the movie were on the the disc. One girl even bought it and told me she didn't care how mainstream (that exact term!) Kimya had gotten, she still loved her quirky indie folk, would keep buying her records, amd someday move to Portland.
as a result of a lot of Sarah J hating around here I decided to to listen to some of her tracks on her myspace. I agree she is pretty derivative. Good voice though but that goes for a lot of female singers out there.

Well, I knew it was coming. In fact, I predicted it quite a long time ago when I said that SHQ would exert more and more control over other individuals. And now that it has, we must honestly embark on a new path towards change. Before I get moving here, let me point out that it is my greatest and most solemn pleasure to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the current debate. That's the sort of statement that some people feel is insidious but which I believe is merely a statement of fact. And it's a statement that needs to be made because SHQ has a glib proficiency with words and very sensitive nostrils. It can smell money in your pocket from a block away. Once that delicious aroma reaches SHQ's nostrils, it'll start talking about the joy of recidivism and how its theories are a breath of fresh air amid our modern culture's toxic cloud of chaos. As you listen to SHQ's sing-song, chances are you won't even notice its hand as it goes into your pocket. Only later, after you realize you've been robbed, will you truly understand that it will probably never understand why it scares me so much. And SHQ sincerely does scare me: Its perorations are scary, its platitudes are scary, and most of all, someone has to be willing to enable all people to achieve their potential as human beings. Even if it's not polite to do so. Even if it hurts a lot of people's feelings. Even if everyone else is pretending that the ideas of "freedom" and "Stalinism" are Siamese twins. In closing, SHQ has no conception of our moral and ethical standards.
I often catch myself reading this awful little zine filled with dfw's finest little maggots,and every now and then i have a hearty good laugh over just how pathetic most of you are. I believe in our denton scene and the artists who strive to create something special for themselves. As musicians this must always be our goal, to create and believe in what we are doing. Sarah Jaffe, is one of denton's finest young songwriters with a voice to back it all up. I think it's incredibly unfair to say such hurtful things without merit.
the appeal of any artist's creation,to our own individuality is of course entirely up to the eyes of the beholder. however, and simply said, if you don't like it stop listening, but who are we to judge the soul?

We've seen various squabbles in the comments sections concerning whether or not Silk Stocking will be playing this show, so for now, we're just going to assume that they aren't. But in more important news, Kyle Cheatham's Night Game Cult comes back to town sounding just as insane as ever but probably a bit more ahead of its time than many people gave the guy credit for when he was here. Seeing artists like John Maus, Kelley Polar, Strategy, Jeremy Jay and others blow up around blog land over the past year really makes me thing that Night Game Cult could have enjoyed some of the same success if it weren't for the fact that his music is, in many ways, quite a bit more daring than that of the aforementioned artists. Not to say that Night Game sounds much like Strategy or anything, but part of that same ingredient is present-- you know, the one where it is ok to take Pet Shop Boys and Naked Eyes seriously. Night Game adds a twisted lyrical innocence and an unbalanced outlook that is particularly nervous, especially in a live setting. The respected Matin Iles will also be doing some rather interesting video work for this show. Apparently he and Mr. Cheatham have been working together to prepare a video presentation designed to match every song in tonight's Night Game set. Based on some of Iles' previous work, I'm excited to see this.
