It List: Thursday
We're gonna have to be a little shorter than we'd like to be today because we're busy (including working on a couple more features that you'll see soon). Anyway, here are shows, and we have even more listed for tonight in our show calendar:
Mi Ami/Thank You/The Watchers (The Lounge): Quarterstick Records' Mi Ami features 2/3 of the members of former Dischord group Black Eyes ( a short-lived but celebrated group), and although you might recognize some very loose stylistic similarities between Mi Ami and their former band, this band is quite clearly a different proposition: highly rhythmic, with an emphasis on percussion rather than guitars, etc., listeners will hear traces of dub, krautrock, Afrobeat and rough, experimental jazz, like if Miles had gone punk rock on Bitch's Brew. Interesting stuff that experiments with a lot of different sounds but largely retains the intensity of these artists' work in their previous band. Thrill Jockey's Thank You head down a similar road with their material-- a focus on complex rhythms, but with a more subdued, Kraut influenced approach than Mi Ami-- repitition and mood are the weapons here, and they work quite well. The Watchers feature Michael Chamy of Zanzibar Snails and Mark from Good Records. Should be a quality show.
Sun Club (Rubber Gloves): This will be Sun Club's last Thursday night performance until early April, so stop by and give it a try if you're into disco, acid house, new house, etc. This week's guest DJ will be Yeahdef.
Billingham's Defense System (Fallout Lounge): Tonight's guest will be Passenger Panda.
80's Night with DJ G (Hailey's)
