Am I wrong in thinking this? I'd love if someone shot it to me straight.

Calling yourself an artist has to be about the ballsiest thing a person can do. You just have to really believe in yourself and truly love what you do or it comes off looking like a lie, and then when people actually end up seeing/hearing/etc. your work, 9.9 times out of 10 they will look at you as a liar/bullshitter/hack/etc. because you didn't deliver as an artist in their eyes.

The same goes with poets. Don't call yourself a poet unless you really think you have the goods to deliver. That goes with any medium too. I am not a poet or an artist. I REALLY love to create though.

It's just that there's this show being advertised right now, and the headline reads "Art is the real threat", and then it lists the bands that are playing the show that the headline is representing. Now to me, that headline is saying that the bands that are playing that show are in fact artists who are making art for me to see. The first thing I thought after seeing the headline for that show was: "There's no WAY i'm going to that show. Those guys have the nerve to call themselves artists?! I saw that band last week. They sucked! They're not artists. How cocky."

Well, this is how I feel, and I am a possible audience member for these bands/club's shows. What do you think?

7:37 - That fest has an amazing lineup, and it will be a great free show. Just enjoy it.

The show will be a mix of music and visual art including projections. There will be multiple local artists showcasing their work.

i don't know about unreleased Monks but there is a new 2 cd Monks tribute album called "Silver Monk Time" with artists like The Fall,Raincoats,Silver Apples,Faust & Psychic TV contributing their interpretations of Monks songs. It's pretty interesting although it's more experimental than rockin.

Those tribute trax landed into my DJ set about 2 months ago. It is very hit or miss. The hits are quite good though. The Monks Demos was released earlier this month on Munster records. It is reallly good.

Trying to define art on a local music blog is pretty silly. Plus, your definition is apparently too slim to allow for other people's opinions.

Beyond that, none of the bands involved actually have anything to do with the advertising for that show anyway. It is going to be awesome and free though, and you will regret missing it. Unless you're sensitive to the heat of the Dirty Ol' Basement.

I'm sorry, but Mom and Sean Kirkpatrick completely suck ass. If I could look at either of them as artists then I would probably go to the show. But they're completely lame, so I think i'll pass.

Don't call your shit art unless you have the art to back it up.

Fortunatly for Dentron, you are not the person who gets to decide what is or isnt art. Eye of the beholder and all that tired shit.

Mom and Sean will hold thier own without you and your opinions. I don't think it will hurt thier feelings.

They don't need some anon telling them what to do.

Ok, this is all really really stupid. The people from Gutterth came up with a name for a show. Ask them about it. The show is a J and J's pizza. It is free. Its a free fucking show. Go or don't go.

But, I can promise you that no band on that bill will call themselves artists because of it. Thats a really dumb thing to assume. Let's not be stupid.

As long as 7:37 likes the art, and there are no poets hanging about, and the band is not Mom or Sean Kirkpatrick, it will be Art for sure.
