Weekender 6/29/07-7/01/07

FRIDAY

Weedeater/Mitra/WoFat(Pastime Tavern): Original headliners 400 Blows cancelled due to illness, but Parade of Flesh has recruited WoFat to round out a bill that now features Southern Lord's stoner rock influenced Weedeater, who will take the stage at 1130. Once you listen to these bands and picture them playing at Pastime, you'll see why it is the perfect venue for a show like this. I'm really glad POF is putting shows on at that place. Dallas' Mitra isn't exactly my bag, but they seem to hold their own within the circles they travel. This is one of those shows I kind of want to see even though I'm not sure how much I'll like it. Sometimes those are the best kind.

Keith P/Schwa/Select- Chromeo Record Release Party(Fallout Lounge): Why have there been two of these Chromeo release parties in the past couple of weeks? Don't ask me. But this set of DJ slots will function as the latest edition of Hotflash, and it should be a good one. Keith P is one of the most tasteful and capable DJs in town these days, and it should be a treat to hear him spin everything from Burial to Simian Mobile Disco to Spank Rock to Sneaker Pimps.

MarnieStern/Fishboy/Eat Avery's Bones (Rubber Gloves): Hey. I'm just writing to the guy that hates me for making fun of Marnie Stern: I don't mean to make you mad, bro, but this time I acually went and downloaded her album. And you know what? I hate her even more now. Sorry. The full band will probably make this better than the performance I saw at Pitchfork, as will the fact that EAB is playing... but it won't be enough to make me consider watching her again. Check the Myspace if you don't believe me.

SATURDAY

Faux Fox/Ghosthustler/The Party(Granada): I'm curious to see what kind of crowd this show attracts. For one thing, it's free for 21 and up and only $5 for 18 and up. Second, it has received at least a little coverage in both the Observer and the Dallas Morning News, so I'm guessing some curious parties might come to check out some of the more trendy names in Dallas music. And I don't mean "trendy" as an insult, but rather as a "so hot right now" kind of thing. And the people who constantly accuse Ghosthustler of sounding too much like Faux Fox can go to this show and find out that they're wrong. I'm willing to bet that this show will be a lot of fun, and might be the first of many large crowds Ghosthustler plays to this year.

Mincemeat or Tenspeed/Cars Will Burn/Dave Smolen/Brokenizer/Dromez(House of Tinnitus): A solid harsh noise show to add to the already impressive performance roster that HOT has accrued. I actually received an email not too long ago from a well known New York based magazine asking some questions about the place, which is pretty funny considering that some people still like to dismiss Denton DIY as "some dude's house." I've said several times on here that I'm not the Prince of Noise like some people like to think, but I honestly feel that every one of these groups is pretty interesting, and EVERYTHING I've seen at House of Tinnitus has ended up being better live than recorded.

Mom(And/Or Gallery): Mom will be performing for free at 8pm as part of And/Or Gallery's opening of it's latest exhibit, which features the work of Lily Hanson and Jason Singleton. Click on the And/Or link for more info on the art. And/Or shows are always an entertaining and stimulating way to start out the evening.

Attractive and Popular/Stag Film(Pastime Tavern): Another good Pastime show from Parade of Flesh. Attractive and Popular is an awesome live act, and I'm actually surprised that more people don't rave about them in the comment sections of this blog.
The Riverboat Gamblers/The Arrivals/Last of the Interceptors (Rubber Gloves)

Gutterth Festival (J&Js Pizza): Huge free festival that gets going around 2pm and keeps going until just about closing time. To be quite honest, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the acts playing this thing, but I can telly you that Mom, Chris Garver, New Science Projects and Sean Kirkpatrick are worth seeing for sure, especially when it's free. Click this to see the full set times, etc.

The Smoke (Art Club): Fans of the Smoke will be happy to learn that the Smoke DJs will be handing out their mix CD on Saturday night. They'll also be happy when they see what a vast improvement Art Club is over the old Avenue Arts. Now book more shows dudes!

SUNDAY
Check back wit us... doesn't look like anything is happening, but if it turns out we're wrong, we'll post something this weekend.

there's no point to miss, 4:55.

the only thing faux fox ever did right was try to be like ghosthustler before ghosthustler ever existed. they were fun to watch the first time, but it's the same show over and over and over....for the last couple of years. still, I'm going to go see gh and the crowd. this should be really interesting!

i'm curious what it is about faux fox that is jokey or revivalist. what type of sound are they making fun of/bringing back? i've heard their recordings, but haven't seen them live. it sounds like lots of different electro stuff from the 70's and 80's but i didn't think it was a parody of anything. how are they live? do they wear makeup and wigs or something?

7:37 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

As i understand it faux fox started off as a silly fun thing and it was.. then somehow turned into a serious disaster that does not know when to stop! Really they need to move on..

5:05 .. I would not compare faux fox to GH because GH seems to have thier shit together and way more staying power

Faux Fox is a freakin' great band with tons of energy and creativity. They never fail to put on an entertaining show with loads of energy. It's music and entertainment rolled into one chocolatey tootsie roll. Get yr self some...

7:46 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure how you can say anyone who has only played a handful of shows has staying power. I liked Ghosthustler the first time I saw them, the second time was a boring carbon copy of the first. I might check them out again once they have more songs written.

faux fox should stop ripping off bands that don't exist yet. they should also be either serious or ironic and either stop changing or stop doing the same thing every time so that they can achieve staying power by quitting after all the years.

two things. first, i released violent squid + forbes/young/gonzalez trio SPLIT LP today. $2 @ Recycled (2 copies) and $2 @ Strawberry Fields (2 copies) and 2 copies @ SHQ for FREE. the recording of forbes/young/gonzalez trio is a recording of their first time to play together. it sounds really awesome. i will have more copies available at our show RGRS July 8th w/ a band from ashville. they sound pretty good. cool. next thing, i'm going to play tomorrow with brokenizer @ HOT. i'm really excited to play with Mark Parker again. it's going to be sweet. Mark Parker is an amazing psych player, if you know him than you already know that he has been behind the scenes of a lot of great bands in their early stages. and has also been a part of a lot of great bands that have all been very short lived but badass none the less. this is a rare chance to see him out. i'm very excited to play with him again. a few things he's played in the past have been dokademo doa, maybe pointy shoe? not sure on that one. GUN TO SATAN'S HEAD TURN YOUR BODY!, White Deer. i don't know. he's awesome. great show tomorrow night lined up. word.

I believe it is quite obvious that Ghosthustler completely rips off Faux Fox. Why the hell should I go to this show is what i'm asking. You people are really into some gay ass music. Just soulless played out 80's fashion music for stuck up children.

You actually still like Flock of Seagulls. And Berlin. You probably even like Yello. Jesus.

Play us some music that is devoid of any influence of yesterdays and it's problably from outerspace.

Some of us actually remember the 80s. Do you expect people to go out and throw their keyboards and drum machines in the garbage because those days are over? You can't stop evolution and you can't stop technology so just move to a cave and beat on your bongos "soul man".

Faux Fox is very coldwave/Ultravox/1980 sounding to me. Ghosthustler is like Yello meets new European house stuff with postpunk revival sounding vocals.

Two totally different sounds.

If you can't hear the difference, it's because you don't listen to electronic music. And if you don't like electronic music, then get the fuck out of cyberspace and find some bongos. The human race is evolving, and electronic music is a reflection of that.

Though I never thought you'd get popped,Prince William, you gotta learn nobody is hate-free on weshotjr. Except for Wanz and Farah, right?

FF and GH are two unique and creative performance driven art-dance bands that are not for everyone.

If they had beards and guitars instead of white pants(we're pretty obsessed with those dude's pants, aren't we, baby?) and keyboards, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Wait, we would. There's still the fact that they're young, cute, and getting attention that chaps so many hides. Denton, get over yourself already.

6:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:09. old people nostalgic for the 80's are the only ones who can't figure out how to work a bitTorrent client. that's why Bon Jovi is number 1.

If you can't tell that Faux Fox is deadly serious and coming for your children you better recognize before they slit your throat in your sleep.

The guy from Ghosthustler was so HOOOT!!!! I forgot to pay attention to the music which was much better before I knew he was HOOOOOT!!!! (did their guitarist used to play with Huey Lewis???)

Numan/Tubeway, yes, but I always hear more Ultravox for some reason.

What's the deal with performers and their dire need for fame?

8:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please tell me what Faux Fox and Ghosthustler DON'T have in common.

Both of those bands sound like The Gap Band jamming with Flock of Seagulls. And I could definitely do without both. Their lead singers are practically identical(Brian Campbell from Faux Fox should seriously think about suing the singer from Ghosthustler). They both heavily use that bendy synth shit(The Gap Band claim to fame, see: "You Dropped a Bomb on Me".

Yeah, people will of course keep using the same instruments that were used in the last 200 years, but they don't have to write the same music as what was strictly being made in 1980-81. It's getting old.

8:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now i'm not saying that Faux Fox is unoriginal though. They did it first, and SUV and Kate is a Fascist are killer songs....early 80's sounding? Definitely. Danceable as fuck? Hell yes!

I'm just saying that Ghosthustler is stealing their fire. The proof is mainly in the vocals/synth sound/clothes/well....I guess pretty much every facet of the music.

9:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This conversation is like Bon Jovi trying to convince Prince that he sounds like Stacey Q who in turn sounds like Kraftwerk and Donna Summer. The similarities end 1 second after you jump in the pudding where the proof is nowhere to be found. This is what it sounds like when seagulls cry.

Damn it, it's 1999, get a grip! Bongo time!

I like them both, but I don't see the similarity.
Oh, and I highly doubt that he went out to hot topic whenever he "decided it was cool" to start a "band". These dudes are comfortable in what they wear.

That's funny, Flappers. You just bitched me out and then you complemented me on my "whip crackage". You don't really care who the hatred is aimed at as long as it's still hatred, huh?

And by the way, By sacrilige I was talking about Christian Teenage Runaway's retarded upside down cross "T" and Chief Death Rage's super pretentious pentagram. Seems like all of the bands on your roster are all about satanism. Or are they just using the images to "look cool"?

4:03 PM

Do you even know what a metaphor is, Floppers?

do you want a little of the lord inside you? i will give you my upside down cross "T" extra hard..

Anonymous Anonymous said...

the bands that use the religious symbols are a band. 8CAC didnt use those symbols for themselves is all i am saying. DO I know what a metaphor is? DO YOU KNOW WHAT A FLAPPER IS, obviously not since you are calling me floppers you chode. I agree with what I agree with. I am not going to just behind one persons views I have my own views and I agree with alot of different people about alot of stuff. I dont have to stand behind one specific belief, I am an individula with my own thoughts. I agreed with you because of the "saying shit to my face" concept, that is all. I am trying to make a point that people all have something good to say, not all bad all the time. I am not going to hate on someone for one thing they say only if everything they say is stupid. By the way how am I supposed to know its you when you hide behing ANON.

Historically, the reversed cross is a symbol of humility -- Peter was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. Naivete on this point is shared equally among Christians and wannabe Satanists.

The pentacle/pentagram is NOT Satanic, far from it. Anton LaVey established the inverted pentacle as the basis for his black mass rituals in the latter half of the 20th century, using it and the head of the goat/Baphomet as a symbol for freedom of the self. Pentacles have been a huge part of religious symbology across many cultures globally; Mayans, Babylonians, Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese. Christian kabbalists were obsessed with it. There's a pentacle on the dollar bill. The White House is in the center of a giant pentacle. The pentacle was worn by early Christians to symbolize the five wounds of Christ.

The pentacle is symbolic geometry inferring a concentration/cone of power... it's NOT "Satanic".

The pentacle in Chief Death Rage's CD artwork (which I designed -- Jonah did the cover) is not in an inverse configuration.

All of the 8CAC iconography is constructed with specific purpose and sacrilege does not enter into it.

Next time, check your facts. Running your mouth about shit you obviously know nothing about is juvenile. As is this overly bitchy, pointlessly didactic response. All the same, fuck off please.

If all you can say is you dont like a few of the IMAGES on the site than you just dont get it. And honestly, 8CAC wasn't made for people like you to enjoy. You are a sad pathetic individual.

6:39 - I'd be mad, but you called me dorkass. And that's a really funny word.

A lot of other hardworking citizens helped make that site besides me, and we have very focused intentions. We'd rather see constructive conversation and polite criticism take place, artists actually helping each other out, than the hatred and jealousy saturated bullshit that abounds in the anonymous comment threads here. I wasn't trying to plug "my awesome website", I was being completely honest. If there were another such moderated discussion forum, I'd be glad to use it as well.

10:07 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

why do you and your wife continue to care about anons posting? So your wife can go beat someone up or harass them endlessly? Real polite and constructive. For someone who describes themselves as outside the mainstream or underground or whatever, surely you know that big brother Bush and censorship is a bad thing, right? Since i know you guys care I am a nobody music fan.

"And if you don't like electronic music, then get the fuck out of cyberspace and find some bongos."

"This is a music blog you cunt."

you two bug.

1:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Please don't assume that because Heather and I are married, that we share the same voice or views on everything. I don't always agree with what she says or the way she says it, and she knows that.

I am most decidedly not interested in "harassing" anyone, but I sure as hell am going to have my two cents when myself or my friends are being harassed.

I have said many times before, that I do not believe in censorship and I have no problems whatsoever with anonymous posting. I believe that 90% of the pointless antagonism on this blog is the result of a lack of accountability in terms of the requirement of screen names. Talking shit anonymously to a big audience, when you can type your name in as anything you like, is an empowering and potentially destructive thing. If someone's got a name, even a fake anonymous one, you can at least have an argument/conversation with them about something.

I completely respect SR and DL's views on the issue, but at the same time I'd like to have a forum in which to have constructive conversations instead of one liner bitch fights all day long. I'm not saying I am innocent of participating in bitch fights -- but I only speak up in a negative manner when myself or people I care about, are being attacked in an unfair, uncouth manner.

I hope you understand me, I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or argue for the "joy" of arguing -- I hate it. Perhaps you're right, perhaps I just shouldn't even respond. Part of what frustrates me so much, is that it's very rare that I've met anyone in person in this music scene who was rude to my face, or antagonistic in any way. I like and love everyone I've met. So I don't know what's going on, with all of this, but it's depressing.

I'm sure I come off a little pissed off when I post, because it's usually in defense of something, but I'm not an angry or judgmental person, and hope I never become one.

7:58 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anons seem more intelligent than people who go by their real names on here. I swear to God it's a scientific fact.

And what's really funny is I have NO IDEA who Lars or his wife are, so they're just as anonymous to me.

And that shit you said at 11:02 PM was infact a shameless plug, Lars. You just don't have the guts to admit it.

9:21 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I did admit that it was a plug. I mean, that should be obvious. However, I was attempting to explain that my motivations were nothing close to an attempt at self-glorification, and that the website was planned and created by several 8CAC citizens, and is not about me at all.

I'm looking for conversation, comraderie, and friendship when I post here, and it's hard to converse with someone without an identified name. I don't mean to make blanket statements about everyone who chooses to post anonymously here... I know there are some of you with good intentions. It seems like whenever I post and share my thoughts, though, I just get further rebuttals and no acknowledgment of what I'm trying to say. For Christ's sake, I'm trying to understand and become friends with you people, not perpetuate senseless arguments. Why can't we just encourage each other? Everyone seems to feel so threatened. Me included, I guess.

10:05 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I only attack people who attack me first. It isn't like I am just getting on here and shitting all over people. Yeah, yeah, I know, two wrongs don't make a right, eh? Well that may be so but If I am going to be attacked on here by people who one, either don't know me or two, are hiding like a bitch behind the anon computer mask I am sure as hell going to defend myself. The day that these people grow huevos enough to say these things to me with a signature at the bottom will be the day that I chill out. I am just confused because, if you dont know me then you cant talk shit about me. And if you do know me, and you are talking shit about me then that is something that we need to deal with on a personal level. And yes, Lars and I don't agree most times, but just because we are married dosent mean that we arent still individuals with our own beliefs and feelings. Whatevs, I am just letting it be known that I have a reason to defend myself. It all good, let the music keep flowing and the FRIENDS keep supporting and loving one another.
