It List: Wednesday 7/18/07

In case you were really sweatin' it, the Dallas Observer music award nominee list came out today, and you can see it here. Fucking snooze fest as usual. Moving on...

Not much going on today, but Astronautalis is playing at Rubber Gloves for those who are interested. I'm not crazy about him, but the guys at Party Ends sure seem to like him.

And I almost forgot, the popular Short Attention Span Theater will be happening at Hailey's as well. Good stuff.

oh.. that's right.. you're on there too!

what a sly way of getting people to see you on there while still maintaining your indie cool.

the doma awards just made me throw up in my mouth a little. i'm pretty sure a couple of the best new act nominees have been around since 2001 or so.

i'd love to see the wsjr readers bum rush the vote and get some truly awful awards on the books.

Ooh, you got us. I actually went to the awards last year. We can't help it if we're nominated. We certainly didn't ask to be. You think it's easy to maintain "indie cool?"

Am I wrong, but isn't it all about who can stuff the nomination box? I was under the impression none of those bands, musicians, or blogs are chosen by the Observer. They're all nominated either by mail or on the website, by people from Dallas.
I do not feel like this is a comprehensive list at all of Dallas' wide spectrum of sounds. In my opinion I don't think I should see so many of the same artists in different categories. And I should also NEVER see a band that has been around for seven years in a new band category.
I think the DOMA ballot shows how truly lazy the music writers are at the Observer. No research, no effort, no motivation: these are the reasons Dallas music suffers.

but then again i can't remember whom all i'm sleeping w/at the observer lately. sike.

SR,

Agreed whole-heartedly about Black Tie Dynasty's musical prowess, but at least they offered to symbolically bow out of the New Act category of their own accord. Just awaiting a Radiant response in outrage of their repeat status. Or potential voter response?

Uhhhmm... No Radiohead Tribute bands in Dallas. Just a night Tributed to Radiohead. Performed by Original local bands that are influenced by Radiohead. God forbid there be a tribute band called, "Karma Police". Thats when I move out of Dallas if I have not done so by that time.

Thanks for the props, Anonymous.

I miss seeing Frank's show on the ballot.

btw, The Good Show would love to sponsor a WSJR Music Awards show.

What do you think we'd get in exchange for a year's worth of belly-button lint (from four sources!), a broken MP3 recorder, and a stack of well-produced Paris Hilton vinyl?

Only half-joking. You plan it, we'll score you some on-air promotion and all the Dane Cook swag you can carry.

Wow. WSJR Awards. This is actually pretty exciting. I've really been thinking about this a lot lately and WeShotJR is the best thing that covers DFWd music around here. Observer, well...it's just not very observant. GvsB, it's like reading regurgitated Pitchfork. BigDLittled has some good stuff sometimes. Quick...meh.
Anyway, I think if there actually were WSJR awards people would actually care. It's pretty obvious that noone cares about the Observer awards, except Black Tie and Radiant. With that said...

6:31 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, I'm just thankful we've graduated to "meh."

Dallas Observer music coverage hasn't been the same since Bob Wilonsky pried out the earplugs, shaved the remainder of his head hair, and transformed into a (cough) serious movie critic.

Still, it'd be great if you could get him to guest present an award at the banquet. And if he capped the festivities by trotting out an oversized novelty "check" from Mark Cuban and announced that HDNet was buying WeShotJR lock stock and barrel.

jonofdeath i'm pretty sure you meant to say Pitchfork is like reading regurgitated GvsB. let's be real, they might as well change the name of the forkcast to "we straight jacked this from GvsB or possibly another blog, but choose not to credit them."

but yeah a WSJR awards ceremony would be good.

OK, I was lying about the Dane Cook swag. Maybe there's a couple koozies still left in the prize closet, nestled in among those cardboard air fresheners from Eddie Murphy's last two or three movies.

I'll lurk through here occasionally, but also consider emailing me at tom.at.goodshow.dot.net with details so we can arrange an in-studio appearance or a phone-in or two (whatever works best with your schedule and commute to Greater Metropolitan Cowtown) for shameless fun and promotion.

That said, I lied about the belly-button lint too. Only three sources.

Blogger Jonathan said...

Sounds like a pretty good point. I actually didn't realize that the Forkcast was like that. Then again, I don't check many other blogs due to the fact that I get my fill here. And when I do look at others it seems like they all say the same things. But now it all starts to make sense.

Help break my Susan Lucci run. This is my 9th nomination for an Observer award in the experimental/electronica category. They used to call it experimental/Avant garde category. They should rename this category "we don't know what to call this music so let's stick it here". Maybe next year.

9:32 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Awesome, I can't believe Wanz just dropped the 'All My Children' reference! You should vote for him just for that, and, because he's prolific as hell. Whether you like him or not, he works harder and knows more about avant-garde rock and electro than you ever will.
