We might have a surprise guest-- I won't say who because I'm honestly not 100% sure it will happen, but I'll give you a hint: Vice Magazine hates them. Come to Fra House tomorrow and find out.
Mike Gerner told me that they had been pulled from their tour with Death From Above 1979 by Vice Records while they were promoting their Vice-released EP, 'The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street', due to some sort of tiff between the bands.
I don't know what happened exactly, but Vice evidently sided with DFA, and Vietnam was off the tour.
Vice had put that EP out, but I think it was picked up later by Atlantic. They self-released some stuff and then put out 'Vietnam' on Kemado.
I'm not sure why I went through that, except to clarify my guess as to why it could be Vietnam. I assume Vice must hate them.
I really hope it is Best Fwends, though. Tell me why Vice hates them. I'd love to hear that story.
i guess it works out nice when best fwends cancelled the 15th to play with akkolyte and koji kondo but magically have the same show a week earlier... hmm.
Thank you very much to everyone that came out. We all had a splendid time. It was quite a blow and a bummer to be shut down so early (10:40pm!), but in the same breath- it's amazing to all of us that there are places like SHQ and The 8th Continent Arts Council that are ready and willing to pull weight around this weird little town. Despite the unfortunate event of police shutting us down, we're all very honored to have played a part in such a crazy night that really exemplified the community/DIY spirit that flows throughout this shitty little Texas college town. The next time you're enjoying yourself at Secret Headquarters or Strawberry Fields, be sure to tell one of the fine individuals that runs the joint(s) just how great they are. They've saved our asses a few times now.
Thanks again- we hope that you continue coming to our little house shows.
Perhaps Fra House shouldn't stage too many shows. Apparently, this has been a concern in the past and was a concern for this event, being that SHQ and 8th Continent were already secured as back-up plans in case the cops showed up. It's nice to be able to have a welcoming space that everyone can come play in, but if your neighbors are consistent sticklers, you've pretty much lost your ability to do what you want with your house. Sorry. Just neighborhood politics.
No offense, Ed, for my last comment. Just stating what may be the obvious.
A recap of my night, Sept. 8 2007:
9PM: SHQ, Florene performs a set of drony keyboard addled screech with delayed guitars as an added layer and the good ole' Mac providing the beats. Two great friends hopping around between duties and making it all come together. A teeth whitener, indeed.
9:45PM: SHQ, Jenny Seman strums the simple chords you hope you could find on your own ... but there's just that one little note that sticks out. And she, as does her Shiny band, thrive on that one tone that her voice can counterpoint. I had an enormous headache before she played. I took a couple of Wal-Profens at some point, and my dull brain pain went away, but I want to think that listening to her perform had the relaxing healing powers that generic drugs lack.
And then my band played ... 10PMish I need some food. Perhaps I will finish later.
Best Fwends were going to play as the full band version "Best Freds" last night. We were going to use Koji Kondos equipment and play after them. Adam broke some guitar strings on the last song of the Koji set, so that was out. We coulda used Akkolytes or Angry-B-mens but they don't have guitars. Besides the dude at SHQ I think assumed that Koji was the last band so we didn't worry too much about it.
I am please that people who run a DIY space are willing to stay up for most of the night for a last minute show move. Despite how frustrating it was to wait around it was good times. Angry Businessmen played the best set I've ever seen them play. Aaron and Stefan smell real nice. Aaron washes his hair with 45 herbs and spices.
Eesh.. please excuse the gushiness of my comment. It was 6am and we were quite inibriated from a long night of chasing the shows. I feel pretty silly. In general. I'm sorry.
To Darren- no offense taken. I understand what you mean. I think that as a whole, we really underestimated how many people would show up to this. Every now and then we get a show offer that feel like we can't turn down. Our ambition to try and keep things orderly and under control got the best of us. In retrospect, I don't really think there's anything we could've done to not get busted. Our efforts couldn't really change the fact that it was just entirely too many people for a residential area. We've been having various shows at our house since 2005, but none have been quite as insane as this bill. Like I said- I feel pretty silly. Having the support of SHQ and 8th Continent only made us feel even more that we had to do it.
Despite all of that.. I had a lot of fun last night. Thanks again to those that came for the two hours that we lasted.
Thank you all for coming out and supporting IndieWriter/WeShotJr--This was one of the best nights I've had in Denton. I'm really grateful to have been a part of it.

Vietnam is currently on Kemado Records.
