It List: Wednesday 5/23/07

Well I was a couple years late jumping on the Lost bandwagon (I promise it had nothing to do with Evangeline Lilly), but here I am, pretty much addicted and looking forward to tonight's season 3 finale. If you haven't ever checked out Lost because you're one of those people that thinks you're too smart for t.v., then you should listen to me, because I'm one of those people too: You've probably had some dumb friend or family member tell you how good this show is, and since the person is likely one of those people who can't be trusted in matters of taste, you've decided that the show must be run of the mill populist brain dead red state network filler between commercials garbage, just like the other stuff on t.v. But I bet if you rent the first season on DVD and watch the first couple of episodes, you'll start to wonder whether t.v. is getting smarter or you're getting dumber. It won't change your life, but I doubt there are many people reading this blog that couldn't enjoy Lost on some level... anyway, the show is done at like 10, so you can do other stuff too:
Short Attention Span Theater (Hailey's): The folks from Denton's Strawberry Fields bring you-
The bar is raised again with TV Carnage 2G. This is the same tape that premiered to a packed audience at a landmark Toronto Porn theatre. It is currently enjoying a successful city to city tour in the romantic settings of other porn theatres. How good is this tape??If you were to think in the terms of fashion, this tape rivals the Acid Wash Jump Suit phenomenon in its ability to shock and amaze. If you think in the terms of pizza slices you will not believe some of the toppings on this “Cringe lovers delight” If you think in terms of “Should I get this or not?” think, “Should”Besides it’s intro, a homage to the top-notch advances in 80’s video toaster technology; this tape is, as Brian Austin Green would say “A one stop Carnival”Some of the toppings include:* A hetro country and western dance competition that looks more like a Gay Pride showcase event.* Steven Seagal on etiquette* Steven Seagal on AIDS* A local news report featuring an elderly citizen flipping out and physically taking on the cops.* A swearing sandwich featuring dialogue from a livid CEO.* A Philippine variety special with a group of people singing and acting out the song “It’s still rock and roll to me.”* A hard sell on beanie babies as a secure investment.* Chuck Norris and his ingenious, porn level, acting skills.
Femme Fatality/Lazer/She-Dick (Rubber Gloves): Promohomo is affiliated with this show in case you couldn't guess.

That's an awfully long paragraph for something called "Short Attention Span Theater".

I gave up on Lost when season 2 started. I just think it got way to out there, and way to nervous to watch. I felt that the show was trying to give me a heart attack by having really intense things happen every couple of minutes. Not entertaining, just annoying and unnerving. I do recommend watching the 1st season though.(fyi there was only supposed to be 1 season in the 1st place, but they decided to milk this fucker for all it's worth.)

5:12... With all due respect, I'm smirking and shaking my head at you right now. You sound like my mom.

Plus, there was only supposed to be one season? That's the goofiest thing I've ever heard. When, in the history of Corporate American Television, has there ever been a One Season show? I don't mean cancelled, I mean greenlit as a one season show. "Hey, I have this idea. We're going to make the most expensive one hour pilot in the history of all networks, and we're going to weave this awesome story, but we're only going to do it for ONE year." It's like you live on another planet. Let me guess... You probably still think that the guy from The Wonder Years is Marilyn Manson, right?

Snark.

Too bad we'll never get the Wonder Years on DVD since they didn't secure the rights to use the music that way initially - it was only licensed for shows, not for sale later. A shame, really. I'd watch that over Lost any day.

my problem with LOST is that it seems insurmountable to catch up if you are new to the game. unless you feel like sitting down and watching two seasons of a one hour show to cram.

also, my LOST-obsessed friends tried to get me into it at the begining of this season only to inform me that "the show's really starting to suck" five episodes into this season. so i gave up though those same people are saying it picked back up after those first half-dozen episodes.

i guess i can now watch three seasons over the summer and be caught up by fall. that sounds tiring though.

It's not coming back until 2008, so you have plenty of time.

Look, I read the shit was only supposted to be a one shot thing, but it caught on so well that they decided to turn it into a "however many more seasons they figured they could make money off it" show. It's just what I read and heard from other people. Give me a fucking break!

Please don't watch commercial television anymore. It's evil, okay? Read a book. Then read another. See, it's fuuun.

Commercials are full of lies and reality television is just heartless and exploitative.

alright, i think i'm going to make a june resolution to catch up on LOST before the new season starts if i've got until 2008.

anon above: i'm pretty sure most people who read this blog are fairly literate people. and can watch tv and make it through a wendy's commerical without getting into their car immediately thereafter and heading straight for a frosty in a zombie-like state. i appreciate your love of the written word but also tv is pretty fun and it really won't make you want to work for haliburton or drill for oil in alaska or send money to pat robertson.

I have a totally non it list related question.

Good place to get insurance for your gear?

Played in Austin last weekend and I'll be damned if there wasn't a trailer with a giant hole cut into the side of it. All gear stolen. I feel bad for those guys and now I'm paranoid and need to insure my shit.

Shit = gear and/or actual fecal matter.

there is no problem with lost. lost is the best show in the universe. if you don't think so or you got tired of it anytime since the beginning, it's because you are impatient. the lost writers will pay us back and fill all of the holes.

to all of you that complain about the writing on this site...

FIGURE 1:

"it makes Iggy Pop seem like a folk singer."

FIGURE 2:

"Listening to Harlem, it's easy to envision an intense live show, the stage covered in beer and saliva and maybe blood."

FIGURE 3:

"...which sounds like the theme music for some sort of rock 'n' roll wizard"

CLOSING STATEMENT:

these three quotes came from an "actual" publication where the writers get paid $$$$

who are the bad writers in dallas now?

11:42 AM

i agree with 7:29

please stop filling your heads with this useless dribble. how is watching lost or heroes going to make you a better person? with all the time you spend watching commercial television you could be reading a fucking awesome book, or spending time with a friend, or taking a walk, fatasses.

although i haven't heard the cd, i do think the white drugs are one of the best bands in the area right now. just my opinion.

as far as the observer goes even a broken clock is right twice a day.

12:51 PM

While I thouroughly enjoy White Drugs, I would slow down a bit when we are talking about the best band in D/FW.

Then again it is Dallas and there's not much to compare it to.

as far as straight ahead rock they are pretty good. i said ONE of the best bands. I think a lot of bands in dfw and denton would agree with me. Maybe i'm wrong??

i promise i am not affiliated with white drugs or observer!

1:28 I think we are saying the same thing. I've been on the same bill with them 2 or 3 times and it's always a good rock show. It's not reinventing the wheel but it is solid.

you have a problem with someone using names?? , i'm certainly not trying to hide who i am although i'm not going to spell it out for you. no need.

i love 'heroes', too, and am also an avid fan of the new 'battlestar galactica'. there is some seriously intelligent tv out there, finally. i can appreciate that.

as far as not watching tele, per 7:29's comment, i agree that so much television is cruel, heartless, and exploitative. but it's not all like that. 12:49, i just got done being obsessed with 'bleak house' on masterpiece theater. now i am totally reading the book! the great thing about intelligent tv is that it can turn you on to ideas and things that you might never have thought of looking for in the first place.

AND, sometimes, one just needs brain to be jelly, especially if you spend a good portion of the day using your brain proactively.

concerning one season shows... there has been some talk of several shows doing that. sci fi channel is likely to do it (they were the originators of 'heroes' but they are owned by nbc), and they have been doing shows in half seasons, etc., slowing going down that path. i think heroes was originally going that way. battlestar will end in 2008. they had a short season from end of jan to march, then are off until the finale of the show in 08.

what's funny is that i sound like i watch tv all the time, but i always have to record it or wait for dvds to come out!

okay, sorry, talking talking talking. drinking coffee and trying to put off going to work! i am sure i will be 'appropriately' crucified on here for it.

congrats to white drugs on that review. the words were not smooth but the message was just such a thing!
