We Shot A Mix: Pretty Vacant

So now that Memorial Day has come and gone, it's safe to say that Summer is officially upon us. Here in Texas, the season can be a little hard to take to say the least, but whether you're looking forward to the heat or dreading it like we are, we figure the concept of "summer" provides us with a nice opportunity to kick off something new on this blog...

So over the next few hot months, we're going to present "We Shot A Mix," a brand new series of posts where we invite one local DJ, band or DJ group to put together an original, party oriented dance mix for your downloading pleasure. There will be no criteria or theme to any of the mixes: they do whatever the hell they want, give it to us, and we give it to you. Pretty simple. We figure with the number of good DJs and tasteful musicians in the area these days, it should be pretty easy to convince people that this is in fact a brilliant idea. You should expect a diverse range of artists to participate over the next couple of months, and I'm sure the mixes will all be full of new music and pleasant surprises.
Anyway, we're happy to kick off the We Shot A Mix series with Pretty Vacant, a new DJ duo who played a big role in getting last weekend's excellent Glass Candy show together. Consisting of Dallas party people Lolita and Justin V (former member of High Society), Pretty Vacant brings a diverse and tasteful palette to the table, focusing on everything from new house (I refuse to call it "Blog House") to disco to punk to synth pop. The mix below consists of original songs and remixes by the likes of Brazilian Girls, The Teenagers, Mstrkrft, New Young Pony Club and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among others, and the thing builds up, peaks and comes down over the course of just under 30 minutes. The mix is very well put together, by the way, featuring a dark party vibe that's a lot of fun without being too obvious. I honestly enjoy every second of it thanks to the choice remixes and artful execution, and I think once you listen to it, you'll agree that we're likely to see these kids around town a lot more in the coming months.

FYI: blogger is currently not allowing us to post because the "anti-spambots" have come to the conclusion that we are a spam blog. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon, and when it is, we'll post the weekend list.

Also, if you're a friend of ours on Myspace, we've posted the weekender in a bulletin. Thanks.

I don't have a my own myspace page as I find that shit quite self-absorbed. Do you enjoy looking at pictures of yourself all day long? Seems a little bit arrogant....and sad, like you need so much attention. "I hope I got lots of messages today. Oh no! Nobody loves me!(slams keyboard)".

Newsflash. Myspace is for the most part NOT COOL. It is a good marketing tool. It works well for businesses and bands. That's pretty much it.

12:47 PM

Actually I take that back. It is cool, but having a myspace page will not make you "cool-er". You can meet people from Austria so it is pretty cool in that respect.

UPDATE: At this point (Sunday afternoon) our blog is still locked as a "spam" blog, meaning that we are unable to make any new posts until they unlock it. I've been told that this can take several days, and even up to a week. Blows.

However, we've been working on switching over to a new blog program recently, and we're going to speed up the process now that we're having this issue. Hopefully, one way or another, we'll be up and running again very soon.

I'll send updates here and on Myspace.

I am talking about the tone of the mix. The first song is so freaking annoying, the rest weren't as bad but It just sounds very 2002 to me. I <3 We shot jr, take my opinion with a grain of salt, most people dont undestand what that means.

What I was saying is, my opinion of the choice of songs seemed a little outdated. But the mix in no way changed the fact that I love this blog and I respect what they are doing. I value their opinions and hard work. Blah Blah I didn't say what I meant and It came out wrong. I on the other hand appreciate all of the time and work it took to do so. Sorry about the bullshit.

Nothing Brent Best does is contrived. unlike you, he is not worried about looking cool, he just is cool. That doesn't depend on you liking his bands, either. the dude is just heart and soul.

I don't think 1120/1147 exists at all. I think the mysterious anon who always comments how much he hates wsjr yet never goes away, proving that WSJR wins and the haters lose, is a straw man of stonedranger's creation. Just a theory. Anyone else suspect the same?

SR- This is 1109, with the fake anon theory. I honestly am not the anon (straw man or not) that you argue with constantly. If you thought I was, as your last comment suggests, whatever method you used to figure out who that anon is must be flawed. I like the site and don't make those childish comments.
