It List: Monday

Deerhunter/Times New Viking /Nite Jewel(the Loft): Bradford Cox is one of those people that listeners seem to either love or hate based on his personality, or more specifically, his micro/indie celebrity image expressed via frequent message board and blogs posts. Thankfully, I really don't read music blogs anymore, and I certainly don't venture on to Cox's personal blogspot, so I really don't have any ammunition on the guy. What I do know is this-- Cox has been the main force behind two very solid records this year, which is more than you can say for just about anyone else in 2008-- I somehow ended up catching Cox's other band, Atlas Sound, three different times at SXSW this year, and I was quite glad that I did considering that they might have put out one of my favorite records of the year. Along with the first full length Atlas Sound release, Cox is also the main songwriting force behind Deerhunter's latest, Microcastle, which leaked this summer in a sea of controversy. Truth be told, the more melodic and straight forward parts of Deerhunter's recorded output is really where it's at with this band, and Cox has proven himself to be more of a natural when he goes down the shoegaze/60's r&b/dreampop route rather than the harsher, more experimental territory explored in the band's earlier work. Oh, and do show up early to check out Times New Viking, a band that we much enjoyed seeing when they played the We Shot JR/Strawberry Fields show last March. PLUS... I almost forgot that Nite Jewel will be opening this show at well. Give them a listen because they have become one of my favorite new groups of the year, with absolutely seductive vocals and beats that will get stuck in your head for days. Excellent stuff and well worth showing up early for (and this is coming from someone who NEVER shows up early).

Soul Glow Monday w/ Young Doc Gooden (Hailey's): This could very well be YDG's last Monday night gig at Hailey's, so if you ever wanted to see him, do it now.

Cool Out (the Cavern)
