It List: Tuesday
Be sure to check out pics from the Boris show in the Photos section.
Besides the usual Disqo Disco at The Fallout, there really isn't anything to report today. I did want to make sure that everyone in the Metroplex knew that 1919 Hemphill is not simply a house that hosts "house shows," as was reported on The Observer blog last week. 1919 is the longest operating local DIY space, and has been hosting shows, films, meetings and other events for almost six years now. Just for good measure, here's some more info, and all I had to do was click on a link:
About 1919 Hemphill
1919 is a collectively-run, all-volunteer, not-profit, warehouse space. We've been around since September 2002 surviving on (mostly small) donations to keep the doors open for our programs and services. These include maintaining a radical lending library, a 'free store', an alcohol and smoke-free all-ages d.i.y. performance arts space, a documentary film series, and a meeting place for community organizations.
All-Ages D.I.Y. Performance Arts Space
This is the backbone of our fundraising efforts! D.I.Y. means Do It Yourself. DIY also translates into accessibility with respect to cost. Almost every show at 1919 is $5, and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds, because money isn't the only way to help the space out! All-ages is another way that the art actually reaches the people who want to support it. Young adults need a life, too! 1919 is also alcohol and smoke free, which, again, allows for the most participation possible. 1919 is proud to be part of a large network of DIY performance art spaces around the world.
The Free Store
Volunteers maintain a room full of second-hand goods that are offered at no cost. We just ask that people keep the room tidy. The Free Store sees it's share of traffic - i.e. there's a lot of need - especially for adult men's clothing!
Radical Lending Library (zines, books, audio/visual)
Our library boasts the largest collection of DIY zines from around the world in North Texas. They range from cooking to prison abolition! The book aspect of our library has plenty of radical literature unavailable elsewhere. Little needs to be said about the audio/visual library - bands and artists that perform at the space almost always donate their music to our library. We could use volunteers to help organize the library - email evolve@1919hemphill.org
Meeting Place
1919 offers its humble space to a variety of grassroots organizations. We've had a variety of groups use our space: identity collectives (wimmin's, men's, etc.), political/advocacy organizations (anti-war, third-party, animal welfare, unions, drug policy reform, etc.), and activity groups (yoga, meditation, arts and crafts, etc.) We don't 'charge' these groups. Our space is offered as an act of mutual aid.
Conscientious Projector! Film Series
Projecting since 2004, CP! has shown countless hours of stirring documentary footage shot from around the world, which is highly unavailable to movie-goers in North Texas. The award-winning film series has consistently shared films with a social-justice vision designed to incite, enrage, and inspire viewers into action to change their world for the better.

DO gets worse all the time, doesn't it.
Anyways... 1919 is a great place. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have shows...ever. I hope they stay around for years to come.
Thats lame. Im glad you corrected them.
1919 is awesome.
Free Cuban music out on the patio at Dan's Silverleaf. 9:30 PM - done. Mojito specials!
its called "DCP at Night", not the "Observer blog," you should at least get that right so people don't think you don't know what you are talking about
people think that either way and rightfully so. god you are annoying dl.
pete freedman writing an article with inaccuracies, or all out fabrications??? unpossible!
Fort Worth doesn't care about what Dallas thinks... period. It's a house? Cool. Funny looking house. It used to be a porn video store.
It's actually not called "DCP At Night," but thanks for the attempted correction. 5:06, I'm just glad you're here.

Awesome new DJ weekly featuring the best in minimal techno and Anime hosted by John Walker and featuring different guest DJ's every week.
the place to be in Denton tonight is the patio at Dan's! I second the free Cuban music - Norte de Havana - wow

9:54
but i like to drink. just because you arent old enough isnt any reason to deny me my rights.
9:54 here. I also like to drink, but you can't put the bottle down for a mere 2/3 hours for a 1919 show? The Chat Room is near by for a fine booze-soaked after-party! If they had alcohol at 1919, they would be getting shut down by the police all the time, and the last show they would have had there would have been...oh... 2003 ish. Who wants that?
where does that highway go to?
10:08, that is a beautifully constructed caricature of a negro.
For 10:17 .
Are you drunk when you pick out music at the record store?
when your sober do you just not enjoy music?
are you nervous around people and need a drink in your hand to relax?
i'm not 10:17, but let me take a stab at this.
no.
no.

you ain't shit if you ain't never been screwed up

WHAT A JOKE!
Dallas envy never turns out nice.
why can't you drink at 1919? that's wack like sunday school
i like to drink. go to a show. notice how much more energetic the crowds are the later the night gets and the drunker everyone becomes.
oh goodie
that's the kind of person we are..............
is it not possible to drink before or go to your car and sneak-a-drink?
two
i've got a flask in my car if you guys are interested in an after-hours drink..

rolling
sentence fragment.
thanks 1:28 pm for answering
when i'm out I feel more relaxed when i have something in my hands like an ice cold adult beverage.
do i feel jipped when i go to a live show and i'm not allowed to drink my alcohol. a little bit .
but, sometimes you have to seperate the alcohol from the event so that the show can be possible.all ages etc.
have no fear , you'll still be able to drink maybe before the show or after the show ,perhaps when your with your friends chatting about how great the show was at the bar next door.
have comfort in knowing that drinking will still happen one way or another so relax go to the show and enjoy.
and for 10:17 , i agree people really seem to loosen up after a few drinks and the party atmosphere is definately heightened , and for the most part that's how most shows can be .
it's just those small independant venues that ask for forgiveness when it come to putting on shows for the love of music and not the sale of alcohol.
just remember when you buy a drink the money goes to the bar and tips go to the bartender, perhaps the dj gets a percentage but for the most part the musicians get paid from the door sales .
for that one night remember who your there to support.
EVRYBODY USED 2 WANT 2 PLAY AT 1919 AND WOULD END UP BOOKING SHOWZ THERE ALL THA TIME
SUMTHIN HAPPEND THO AND IM NOT SURE WHERE THINGZ TOOK A TURN
RARELY IZ THERE AN OCCASION WHERE THA VENUE SEEZ A DECENT TURNOUT ANYMORE AND THEREZ NOT MUCH OF AN ANSWER AZ TO WHY
ITZ NOT THA LOCATION OR EVN THA LINEUP OF SUM OF THA SHOWZ
I DO KNOW THAT MANY FOLX FEEL THREATEND BY BEING THERE AND I HAVENT KNOWN WHY
ITZ AN AMAZING SPACE THAT I WILL ALWAYZ SUPPORT
BUT AT TIMEZ IT CAN BE 2 EAZY OF A SPACE
AND MAYBE PPL ARE ETHICALLY THREATEND
BUT THE SPACE IZ ACTUALLY WHAT U MAKE OF IT AND DEFINITELY THA MOST DIY SPACE DFW HAZ SEEN IN FORGODDAMN EVR
MAYBE IT HAZ ROUTINED ITSELF INTO DISTANCE FROM NEW AND OR CARING PUNX
sentence fragment.
