It List: Thursday
Terrible Twos/Wax Museums/John Barrett's Bass Drum of Death/The Uptown Bums (818 Hickory St., Denton): Detroit's Terrible Twos were described by someone in our comments section as "future wave synth punks," and that seems to make sense to me, even if it might underplay the group's garage influences just a bit, especially those found in the lead vocals (think Jay Reatard, etc.). The group has made quite a name for themselves both inside and outside of their native Detroit, making a rather big splash during SXSW and recently being invited to play at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit after touring with the Dirtbombs. Hailed as the next generation of Detroit Noise/Garage punk by their hometown media, the group's synth sound is certainly front and center in most of their material, but you can always hear that Detroit garage/upper midwest Proto-punk sound in their stuff. It's pretty refreshing and certainly worth seeing at a house show like this one with a great line up of local openers and the rather excellent John Barrett on the bill. This show is being put on for someone's birthday or something, so expect it to get crazy.
Young Doc Gooden/Billingham's Defense System (Fallout): Hey, do you live in Dallas? Are you a hipster? Are you single and thinking about trying to get laid tonight, preferrably with another hipster? Well, this might be the place for you my friend, and I only mean all this as an insult if you want it to be. Anyway, on a more serious note, Austin Brown, AKA Young Doc Gooden, will be leaving us permanently as he heads off for bigger and better things in New York this week, and tonight will be his last performance in the area as a Texas resident. Anyone who has been around Denton for the past year has seen the impressive level of success that Brown has had as a party promoter and DJ, so I'd assume that there will be a good number of people who might want to come out tonight and wish him farewell. And if you like what you hear tonight, you can start checking in at Fallout every Thursday, as BDS have started a new residency there.
